Scientists have discovered a previously unknown cult of pagans in medieval Europe

Archaeologists have discovered a buckle depicting a snake-like creature eating a frog. This bronze artifact may belong to the symbolism of a previously unknown pagan worship. The buckle was “spotted” by a metal detector during excavations near the village of Lany, about three dozen kilometers west of Prague.

According to Jiří Maháček from Masaryk University, almost identical objects were found in the FRG, Hungary and Bohemia. Thus, scientists have encountered traces of a cult that united several Central European regions in the early Middle Ages, even before Christianity arrived there.

The dragon or serpent devouring a victim is a common motif in many cosmogonic myths, but in this region such an image could also be associated with fertility.
